Slow, sloww, sloooooowwww.  Did I mention that it's .... what's the word.... slow?  I literally dozed during a scene where Kristen (Liv Tyler) hides from the killers as one of the killer meanders back and forth past Kristen.
This slasher movie is "inspired" by a true story.  I got into a discussion about the difference between "inspired" and "based on" movies with a friend.  He insisted that it was the same thing.  I told him I believed "inspired" is more loosely based on the real story than "based on".  Can anyone confirm that?  Anyway, this "inspired" movie follows a couple, Kristen (Tyler) and James (Scott Speedman), the night James proposes to Kristen (and gets turned down!).  I would have liked to have seen more about the couple, but it was a slasher flick, so plot development was at a minimum.  The villains also ham for camera which was ridiculous since they were supposed to be terrorizing the couple, not the audience!  And to top it all off, the killers left enough evidence for even Barney Fife to catch them!

Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull is the highly anticipated 4th installment to the Indiana Jones franchise.  Now, I wasn't an uber fan of the first three although I enjoyed them.  This version is somewhat disappointing.  I liken it to Star Wars the Phantom Menace.  Both are decent movies on their own but neither hold up well to their predecessors.  Here are a few problems with this movie.  First, the title is all wrong!  It's not about the KINGDOM of the Crystal Skull.  It's about the Crystal Skull itself.  In fact, it doesn't adequately explain the kingdom at all.  The natives seem to attack the gang for no apparent reason.  I'm not really sure what they were trying to protect.

Harrison Ford looks and acts his age, and Shia Labeouf  does a fine job as his side-kick.  Who knows if he'll take over the series. It may be a long time before we know that.

Overall, it was a mildly entertaining movie.  Just don't look for a deep plot.

Judd Apatow is now my favorite producer.  Okay, so I've never had a favorite producer before, but NOW I do!  I've seen every movie he has written, directed, and produced except for Drillbit Taylor and I have loved them all (even Walk Hard).  Forgetting Sarah Marshall is no exception.  Jason Segel wrote this masterpiece and stars in it.  Brilliant in Freaks and Geeks, Undeclared, and How I met your mother, Jason Segal shines as a musician (Peter Bretter) who is dumped by the beautiful Kristen Bell (Heroes), and he take is hard- real hard.  Trust me, I wouldn't take it well either. Mila Kunis (That 70's Show) plays the adorable Rachel Jansen, a hostess as a Hawaiin hotel who befriends Peter and helps him overcome that hard breakup.  I could go on and on about the co-stars, Paul Rudd, Bill Hader, Jonah Hill, and Russell Brand, but that'll take up a lot more of your time, so I'll just say they were great.

This movie is not for everyone.  It's a new breed of romantic comedy.  Not too many romantic comedies are rated-R, and none of them are this lewd and vulgar.  But it work, and works well.  This movie is perfect for people like me- someone who has been devastated from a break-up.  It's hilarious and real.  It gives hope to those of us still looking for that right person.  And most importantly, you leave with a sore face from laughing and smiling so much.

Go Speed Racer.  Go Speed Racer.  Go Speed Racer, Go!
I have to say I was up in the air about whether this movie would be good or not, but I found myself getting psyched about it the closer it came to coming out.  Most of my friend rebuffed me about my desire to see this movie.  I did finally find one of them willing to give it a chance.  We were not disappointed.
Emile Hirsh is one of the best young actors in America. Catch him in The Girl Next Door, Lords of Dogtown, Alpha Dog, and Into the Wild.  Each of those are better examples of Hirsh's abilities, but this movie is so much fun you won't even think about the acting. The Wachowski brothers (The Matrix) directed this thrill ride and I agree with Richard Roeper who said this movie was  better than both of Matrix sequels.  This movie is stylistically  unique.  You've never seen a  movie like it.  I guarantee it.  It's fun, fast paced, colorful, action packed, and funny.  Fans of the original 1960's Japanese series will appreciate the omages (sp?) to the original series.  I just hope the live action version of Death Note next week will be as good as this one!

About Me

  • To know me is to be bored... I blog movies. I watch lots of them. I'm a geekykool media specialist that refuses to grow-up. I like gaming, sci-fi, Japanese culture, anime, traveling, computers, trying new foods, sports, and pretty girls with big... brains. Seriously. I would live at the Renaissance Festival if it were year round. The same goes for Dragon Con.
